I'm majoring in journalism at CSULB, with a minor in American Studies. Here's the work I've done so far.

About my work

We all have stories about how we started in this industry. Those are valuable for individual perspectives, but I'll cut to the chase. I started writing for FanSided as a junior in high school, covering Arsenal, the San Francisco 49ers and the Sacramento Kings. Eventually, I solely focused on the Kings, where I saw Bleacher Report, Sports Illustrated and Fox Sports feature some of my work. That's when it hit: I wanted a career in this field.

In my senior year, I reached out to the Sactown Royalty staff at SB Nation, landing a role to write game recaps. I developed by reading work from admired authors, watching the film to learn what I read and utilizing numbers to support my writing. Before the pandemic, in January 2020, I received credentials to cover my first professional game for a team: the Stockton Kings of the NBA G-League (pictured above with Gabe Vincent, now a player for the Miami Heat).

Fast forward to today, as a writer for The Kings Herald, film and numbers have become my specialty, as NBA.com featured words from my work. I've also written for 213Hoops.com, an independent site covering the Los Angeles Clippers, as a Featured Columnist during their 2020 playoff run.

Host of Watching the Tape

The Be Heard Platform launched in 2020, when Damien Barling, Morgan Ragan and Deuce Mason, some of Sacramento's finest, promoted marginalized voices through podcasting. I appeared as a guest on some shows but never hosted my own. I wanted to expand my journalistic portfolio, so I shot my shot.

I enlisted the help of Tim Maxwell, one of my favorite writers, to tag along. Thus, we created Watching the Tape. We dig deeper into the nuanced game of basketball through film and numbers beyond the box score. No hot takes. We don't like that. From talking to Stockton Kings head coach Ty Ellis, to analyzing what we've seen ourselves, we bring you Sacramento Kings analysis from a new perspective.

Long beach state journalism

This picture is of me touring CSULB before declaring my intent to enroll (it's blurry because I zoomed it in; we'll upgrade that photo post-COVID). Through five semesters, I've earned a 4.0 GPA, making the CSULB President's Honor List every time. I've also been named a California State University Future Scholar, and the journalism department awarded me the Phyllis Jackson Memorial Scholarship, too.

Perhaps my biggest achievement in journalism is that I was selected to Kappa Tau Alpha, the journalism honor society, in February 2020. Through my journalism classes, I've learned how to write news and feature stories, how to interview, how to write broadcast scripts for television, how to edit audio, how to shoot video and more.

In May 2020, I became the sports editor for the Daily Forty-Niner, CSULB's student-run newspaper, covering how the pandemic affected the school's sports teams. Unfortunately, the pandemic forced me to move home so I couldn't maintain the role, but I hope to be back soon. In February 2021, I became an assistant online editor for Dig Magazine, the school's student-run magazine. As I conclude my last years here, I hope to learn additional skills to craft my abilities. Then it'll be job-hunting time.
